After a few great days in Kruger, I had to leave, reluctantly, but chose the slower route of the S114 from Skukuza to Malelane gate, hoping for one last sighting.
Just after the Biyamiti Weir, with the sun just over the horizon, I looked up the road to see an adult cheetah and three youngsters relaxing on the road.
They started to move down the road towards me, and then past me.
A few minutes of frantically backtracking to try and stay ahead of them led me back to the Weir. There was a sudden moment of swirling dust with the cubs looking animated but confused. I realized the mother was hunting and was onto an impala but the action was hidden by bushes. Moving forward, I was in time to see her at the final moments of the kill.
She then moved a few yards off while the cubs fed, then came back and dragged the carcass into a more obscured position. A very intense 30 minutes or so, and a terrific last day memory to bring home.
